Recently, I was fortunate to be selected as one of 34 educators from around the world to attend the Google for Education Certified Innovator Program in Mountain View, CA. The main goal for this program is to develop a vision to improve education and then, with the support of mentors and coaches, work to implement it over the course of a year. The few days spent learning and collaborating with other educators at Google reminded me of the days when I was in my faculty of education over a decade ago. It was when I had the thought, “I wish I knew then what I know now”, that my project vision became clear to me.
Graduates from faculties of education need to hit the ground running. It is so important for them to be up to date on the latest in education and education technology to support student learning and teacher professional growth. I hope to partner with faculties of education to offer a Get StartEd Summit. The Get StartEd Summit would be a highly interactive one/two day event focused on using Google Apps for Education, iPads and other EdTech tools to promote student learning from kindergarten to grade 12. Teacher Candidates would have the opportunity to learn from Google for Education Certified Innovators, Trainers, Educators as well as local EdTech leaders. There is also a chance that Get StartEd Summits will be supported by EdTech Team which is a Google for Education Partner. The moonshot goal would be to help teacher candidates truly see the power technology can have in giving a platform for student voice, connecting students and teachers to the wider global community and ultimately creating confident, innovative, digital citizens for the 21st century.
